When is a root canal really necessary?
Tooth extraction can be avoided in many cases and root canal treatment can extend the life of your tooth by many years.
Root canal treatment can be an excellent solution:
-
in case of sharp, throbbing, unrelenting toothache
-
in case of swelling of the face, which may be a sign of inflammation around the root apex
-
in the case of extensive, deep tooth decay, if it affects the tooth pulp
-
or if a previously treated tooth causes symptoms.
If the tooth pulp becomes inflamed, this inflamed part must be removed.
Of course, there are times when an inflamed tooth root cannot be treated and tooth removal remains the only solution. However, most of the time there is a good chance of saving the tooth by root canal treatment.

The root canal procedure
Contrary to popular belief, root canal treatment is completely painless in most cases.
To start the root canal treatment, the dentist numbs the area. As a first step, we need to access and clean out the root canals and pulp chamber. We also clean and disinfect the canals.
After disinfecting the root canals, the dentist will first place a filling in them. The root canal is also checked by taking an X-ray. After the root filling has been completed, a filling, inlay, or crown is made as the final closure of the tooth crown.
