What is a dental implant?
Dental implantation is the artificial replacement of tooth roots. A dental implant is made of titanium. Its material does not irritate the surrounding tissues and is fully biocompatible with the bone tissue of the jaw. After the process of osseointegration, i.e. the ossification, the implant is loaded with a denture, a crown, a fixed bridge or a removable denture stabilized with the implants.
This is a durable and frequently used solution to eliminate tooth loss in a way that most resembles your own teeth, or to replace the tooth to be removed.
In the case of a fully developed jaw, anyone can be considered for a dental implant, regardless of age, as long as the patient has an adequate amount of bone tissue. If the latter condition is not met, our clinic also offers bone grafting.

In what cases is a dental implant recommended?
If your removable dentures are slipping and you can’t eat your favorite foods without inconvenience, implant-supported dentures may be the perfect solution! As there are many variations of this, our specialist will determine the most suitable solution for you after a personal consultation and CT scan.
A dental implant is also recommended if only one tooth needs to be replaced, as this eliminates the need to grind down the adjacent teeth and can replace the gap without damaging them.
Here are some reasons to consider why a missing tooth needs to be replaced with an implant as soon as possible:
-
The adjacent tooth may move in the direction of a lack of teeth, which can later cause difficulty chewing.
-
If the tooth is missing for a long time and no force is applied to the bone, the jawbone may become thinner.
-
While eating, food debris can get into the gap, which can have a negative effect on adjacent teeth.
-
Depending on the position of the missing tooth, it can affect articulation and speech. Replacing them, of course, has a positive effect on self-confidence.
Do you want to level up your dentures?
The process of placing a dental implant involves multiple steps. Which are these?
Since the goal is to create a naturally looking and functioning tooth or denture, the position of the implants must be planned first.
1) Step One: Consultation and Planning
During the personal consultation, you will get to know your doctor, who will put together a personalized, precise treatment plan for you. Based on the X-ray taken at the consultation, the oral examination and your needs, your doctor will compile a personalized, detailed treatment plan. In order to carefully plan the implantation, it is also essential to take and analyze a 3D CBCT (Cone Beam CT) scan.
The treatment plan includes the steps and itemized costs of the dental prosthesis, the healing period between the required visits, as well as the recommended type of dental implant and where it needs to be placed.
2) Step Two: Implant surgery
Placing the implant(s) in the jaw is painless; they may be placed under local anesthesia or, if required, under general anesthesia. After the oral surgery, the patient needs to wait for the recovery period required for osseointegration (bone formation or ossification) and bone recovery, following the appropriate advice and instructions.
If there is not enough bone volume and density to insert the implant, a bone grafting procedure is used to replace the missing bone tissue. This may occur at the same time as the implant surgery, but if too much bone needs to be replaced, a separate oral surgery is required prior to implantation.
3) Step Three: Preparation of the final crown(s) / denture
During the 3 to 6 month healing period after the implant surgery, the dental implant merges with the jaw bone. During this time, of course, it is very important to maintain perfect oral hygiene according to the post operative instructions.
After the healing period has elapsed, the final crown, bridge, or denture will be built on the dental implant(s). There are many types of dentures, including implant-supported removable solutions, full bridges fixed on 8 implants, or dentures fixed with the All-on-4 or All-on-6 technique.
Your treatment plan will include the most appropriate solution for you that the dentist sets up after the personal consultation. If possible, our specialist will suggest several alternatives depending on your personal needs and preferences.

Did you know?
With dental implants, regular dental check-ups are even more important than in case of other dental treatments!
The high risk of neglecting regular dental check-ups is that any gingival or pericardial infection or bone loss around the implant will not be detected in time.
That is why we strongly recommend attending at least one dental check-up each year.
